RIPLEY - Larry Livingston Harless, 62, of Ripley departed this life April 1, 2004.
He was born April 18, 1941, in Hanover, Wyoming County, a son of Ann Elizabeth Baker Harless Skeen of Cottageville and the late James Harless. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rocky Lee Skeen.
He was a 1959 graduate of Ripley High School where he was an All-State basketball player during his senior year. He was an elementary schoolteacher, a U.S. Army veteran, a union organizer for AFL-CIO Local 1199, and held a master's degree in industrial economics. He graduated first in his class from the West Virginia University School of Law and served as an attorney for the United Mine Workers for several years. He devoted his career to being an advocate for the people.
In addition to his mother, survivors include sons, Stephen Harless of Irvine, Calif., William and Russell Harless, both of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters and their husbands, Mary Beth and Brett Blackman of Tustin, Calif., Stacia and Martin Gallagher of Cockeysville, Md., Heather Scott of Snow Hill, Md., Cara Williams of Virginia Beach, Va., Anna Harless of Cary, N.C., Sarah and Jason Short of Nottingham, Md., Moriah Cummings of Chicago, Ill.; brothers, Roderick Harless of South Charleston, the Rev. Ben Skeen of Ripley; sisters, Barbara Upton and Becky Cornette, both of Cottageville; grandchildren, Sarah Beth, John, Alyssa, Celina, Lucas, Devon and Madeline; and stepfather, the Rev. Raymond L. Skeen.
Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with the Rev. Gerald B. Sayre officiating. Burial will be in Blaine Memorial Cemetery, Cottageville.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
