Charles W. Yeager
Charles W. Yeager, age 81, of Summersville, died during a visit to Louisville, Kentucky, on October 27, 2002.
He has been publisher, owner and editor of The Nicholas Chronicle since 1991, inheriting it from his cousin, Betty Kincaid Dilley, formerly of Marlinton. The newspaper was previously owned by her sister, Jane Kincaid Eib, and Charlie Eib.
Yeager was born in Frederick, Maryland, September 18, 1921, the son of the late Ina Nuckles and Ralph Arbogast Yeager. His early years were spent in Pocahontas County, where his ancestors lived; his father was mayor of Durbin.
After graduating from West Virginia University, he was an Air Force officer in World War II. After the war, he earned his law degree from WVU and joined the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson. He was in the process of retiring when he inherited the newspaper.
He was a member and officer of Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Surviving him are his wife of 44 years, Charlotte Matthews Yeager; daughters, Gretchen Murphy, of Charleston, Kristin Bridge, of Fayetteville, Tennessee; sons, Charles Yeager, Jr., of Richmond, Virginia, and Matthew Yeager, of Summersville; and eight grandchildren.
His brother, Ralph A. Yeager, preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held Friday at the Summersville Presbyterian Church.
