Mays was born February 14, 1842 on a farm in Amhurst County, Virginia. When he was four years old his parents moved to a farm in Monroe County. Here he grew up and at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted in the Confederate Army at Rocky Point, Monroe County, Va in Company F, 22nd Virginia Infantry and went into camp there. He fought throughout the conflict reaching the rank of senior sergeant in his company, and frequently acting as officer during the absences, illness or disability of lieutenants or captains. Mr. Mays was in many hard fought battles, the hardest one being the battle of Cold Harbor in which ten thousand Union soldiers fell within a period of twenty minutes. In this battle he received a wound in the hand and was sent to the hospital at Richmond for treatment. At the end of four years he received his honorable discharge. After the war he married and settled on a farm in Greenbrier county. Later he resided at Malden a short time. About fifty years ago he moved to a farm at Kentuck, Jackson county where he still resides. He is a member of the United Confederate Veterans, Camp Stonewall Jackson, Charleston. Mr Mays is eighty-four years of age.
