Jackson County, West Virginia - Rhoads Cemetery Submitted by Jeanie Rhodes This cemetery is just behind the Middle School. We transcribed the last 5 stones and did a quick drawing of the cemetery. The rest of the stones were bulldozed into a ditch and covered over years ago. The above is a reference to the RHOADS CEMETERY in Ripley, Jackson County, WV. The remaining stones are: 1) Benjamin Rhoads / died Nov. 12, 1851 in the / 67th year of his age. (NOTE: The original stone is weathered and standing upright. At its base is a new granite stone with the same inscription. The new stone was added in June of 1998.--JLR) 2) Nancy, wife of B. Rhoads. / died Sept. 20, 1849 in the 53rd year of her age. (NOTE: The original stone is weathered and standing upright. At its base is a new granite stone with the same inscription. The new stone was added in June of 1998.--JLR) 3) Blank stone on the ground. (from the family record of Mark Rhodes, this stone once read: William Rhoads, son of B & N. Rhoads / died 1844 in the 20th year of his age.) 4) M. R. (small, rough stone, upright) 5) Blank, small, rough, upright stone) You may list me as the contact on this cemetery and if there are questions I can't answer, I will forward them to Mr. Rhodes (above). John A House: 'Pioneers of Jackson County': pg 136 William Casto married Susie Rollins, a daugher of Elijah J Rollins. He lived at the first place up Tug Fork. William Casto was found dead in the woods, having been shot. The body was lying by a log, and the supposition was that he had been sitting on the log, imitating the call of the wild turkey, to attract the attention of those birds, when some other hunter, hearing him and not fairly seeing him, mistook him for a turkey and shot him, He lived where Holly Staats does now. He probably moved out to Mill Creek not long after 1816, and was from Buckhannon River settlement. He left five children, one of whom, John Casto, married Elizabeth Reynolds, and lived at the mouth of Bear Tree Run, in 1839. He died leaving only one child. It is said he was killed by a handspike at a logrolling. | Family F584

The Thomas Mill was at the bend of the creek. After Thomas's death, the mill became the property of Henry Chase. Bishop's "History of Roane County", pg 681 Thomas John Enoch Thomas, Justice of the Peace of Spencer District, resident in the city at time of this writing. Of this family we are told the following: Enoch Thomas, a Connecticut Yankee, while a young unmarried man, left his parents in New England, came seeking his fortune and settled in the south end of Jackson County about the year 1818, 1819 or 1820; married Annie or Anna Carney, daughter of William [should be Thomas] Carney and sister of Charles Carney, a pre-war sheriff of Jackson County. She was also a sister of Delilah Roach, of Reedy, of Hannah, wife of Levi Casto, of Mill Creek, and of Dorcus, wife of James Brown. [paragraph omitted and placed in notes of Wm Riley Randolph] Enoch and Anna, with their family, became owners of large acreages of lands in Jackson County which he improved. He was a prominent citizen of Jackson County for more than thirty years. To Enoch and Annie (Carney), his wife, were born and by them reared the following children: Elizabeth ("Bettie"), George, Jesse, Malinda, Hiram, Elias A, and Nehemiah M.S., who was elected by the people and served three terms as Justice of the Peace of Washington District, of Jackson County. Elias A Thomas, of above family, married Miss Harriett Shiverdecker, of a family of that name near Raymond City, on Kanawha. They reared five sons and one daughter, their names: Jerry M, John Enoch (first mentioned), George Custer, Samuel Robert, Yuluia Ann, and Elsworth D. | Family F272

He was in the Buckhannon Settlement during the last Indian War where he served as a spy or Indian scout. there he married Susan Fink. As soon as peace was assured, he moved to Warth's Bottom, this was in 1796 or 1797. A few years later, he purchased a tract of 550 acres of land at the mouth of Sycamore, on to which he move in 1804. He built his humble log cabin on the bank of the creek somewhere between where George Armstrong now lives and Sycamore. --- Source: Newspaper article "Judge William Asbury Parsons" Biographical Tribute dated August 17, 1933 in THE MOUNTAINEER, Ripley, West Virginia.
