Wm. Lowther, of Harrison County, and daughter of Robert Lowther. A gray old weatherbeaten headstone under the shadowy beeches of the central part of the old Ripley graveyard bears the quaint inscription – “Here lys the body of Harriet Wetzel wife of John Wetzel born Dec the 12th 1817 and died the 7th of March 1845” John and Harriet Lowther Wetzell’s children were: Hon. Robert T. Wetzell, of Ravenswood. Elizabeth Wetzell, married Ben Chase, who was killed in the Confederate Army, at Lloyd’s Mountain. They had a daughter, Greek Chase, who married a Park. She was very proud of her New York origin. She once said “Virginia doesn’t hustle enough to suit me. One class does not have to work, and the other won’t”. | Family F3770

Larry Hopkins lived on Mill Creek, about 1830. Of their children: Nancy Hopkins married Elijah Burdett. Robert Hopkins, born in Pendleton county in 1822, married Martha A. Representatives of the family emigrated to America long before the Revolutionary War. Some settled in New England and other in New York, Pennsylvania and other early colonies. The immediate ancestors of the pioneer Carpenters of West Virginia emigrated from New York to what is now Bath county, VA and settled on the Jackson River in 1746. . . Thomas Carpenter was wounded at the battle of Pt Pleasant. One of the earliest settlers of Upper Harper District was John Carpenter, veteran of the War of 1812. | 2388 | 1840 Jackson, VA - is she the woman 60-70, living with Ruhanna & Ephraim Evans 1850 Jackson, VA , she is living with son Benjamin "Jackson County in the Wars" Revolutionary Soldiers Wright, Benjamin Sr. He and his wife living in Mason county in 1820 census, both aged 45 and up, with 5 boys and 2 girls in family. Erected the first grist and sawmill at present Cottageville, long known as Wright's mill for Benjamin. He was a son of Jonathan and Sarah (Yard) Wright, of Pennsylvania. An article by Mrs Corinne Staats Fisher in the Jackson Herald states that he was a soldier of the Revolution, as, indeed, were most young men his age living on the Pennsylvania frontier at the time of the war. His son, Benjamin Wright, Jr, age 46 in 1850 census of Jackson county, was the first County Clerk of the new county in 1831. Benjamin Wright, Sr (heirs) owned 1015 1/2 acres of land in the county on Washington's and Fall Runs and Mill Creek in 1832, reference JC Land Book for 182. This sketch taken from "Pioneers of Jackson County", by John House, it appears in the section "Lower Mill Creek" Wright Family Benjamin Wright, who built the mill at what is now Cottageville, came from Greene County, Pennsylvania, about 1800. He married Sarah Casto, as his first wife, and later married a Flowers. Of his children, if the river story is to be credited, he had three daughters who married respectively, a White, Black and Brown. Of others, I find: A daughter who married Squire Evans, for whom the town was named. Benjamin Wright, Jr, who was the first Clerk of the County Court of Jackson County. Benjamin Jr had children: Ruenna who married Hart Rader, Dr. "Bib" Wright, of Ripley and a daughter who married Ed Butcher. Another daughter of Benjamin Wright, Sr, married Joe Bibbee. To this, another historian adds a daughter who married Robert Shively. | Family F574

House, 'Pioneers of Jackson County, pg 152 George stone and wife, Lucinda Miller, and three daughters, Minerva, Sally and Elizabeth, left Greene County in October of 1823, and floated down to the mouth of big Mill creek. They brought two horses, two cows and household goods, settled at the Elias Stone place two miles below Ripley. Fred and Elias, two brothers, survived her (Elizabeth). Hardesty's History of Jackson County Ravenswood District George Stone, grandfather of Otho M., was one of the pioneers of this locality. He came from Greene county, Pennsylvania, to take up his residence on the banks of Mill creek in 1817. He was one of the first squires of the county, and was among the first sheriffs of Jackson county. In starting for himself in life, Otho M. Stone was first engaged in teaching. His first school was at Mt. Olive, this county, his next term at Pleasant Hill, the third at Union, and the fourth and last at Pine Hill, which was his home school. He taught in all four years, and then embarked on a mercantile career. He is dealing in dry goods, notions, hardware, queensware, tinware, cutlery, and the various articles that stock a well-kept store of miscellany suited to the trade he commands. He sells cheap for cash or produce, and all who come to Silverton will do well to remember and investigate the cheap and reliable goods of Otho M. Stone, merchant and postmaster of Silverton, Jackson county, West Virginia. | Family F2068

Married Hannah Allen on June 6th, 1805. She was born January 19th, 1781, and died April 27th, 1861. Their children were: William Allen Rader, born April 8th, 1806, died June 23rd, 1860. Lizzie Allen, died April 3rd, 1860. Michael Campbell Rader, born November 29th, 1807, and died April 14th, 1880. John Rader, born November 26th, 1810, died April 15th, year not known. Robert Rader, born November 18th, 1812, died unmarried. Miriam Rader, born August 1st, 1816, died June 4rh, 1850. Edward Hart Rader, born April 14th, 1819, died October 31st, 1909. Emily Rader, born March 20th, 1822. James Miller Rader, born 1824, died 1842. James Rader married Hannah Allen, a daughter of William Allen, of Mason County. The latter is buried at the Rader graveyard, as is James Rader and his wife. Possibly the Lizzie Allen on the family record is the wife of William Allen. James Rader was wealthy and a man of influence in the county. He was a Justice of the Peace, and held other positions of trust. Of his children, there is no record of any marriage of William A., the oldest son. Robert and James M. died unmarried. Miriam married John A. Hyre. He was born December 20th, 1812, and died January 29th, 1852, aged thirty nine years. They lived on the Allen farm, and John Hyre of Frozen Camp is their son. Both are buried at the old Rader burying ground. Emily married Pleasant H. Thomasson, son of John P. Thomasson, and lived on Left Reedy. Dr. John Rader was a physician. He married Polly Ruddle, and lived on Frozen Camp, at the Sam Parsons place, afterward moved to Elk Fork. Some of his children, and probably his wife, are buried with him in the old graveyard on the Mackintosh farm. | Family F4428
