| 1753 | Cheshire The community was shocked when the word went out Saturday that HA Kirby had passed away. He had been a sufferer for many years with kidney trouble but was so very ambitious that he never gave up until almost the last moment. He was a fine man with no enemies and hosts of friends. His funeral was held at the Baptist church Monday forenoon by Rev Hickman. The Masons had charge and carried out the beautiful ceremonies and rites of that order most impressively. The Eastern Star of which he was a member marched in a body after and eight of the officers acted as pall bearers and with the me_ draped their flowers representing the colors of his order in his grave as a tribute of the respect and love which they bore him. Those in attendance at his funeral from a distance were Mr Wade and Mr Thacker and family of Clifton Forge, VA. , Mrs Cameron, Athens, Ohio, Mr Al Coughenour and family of Vinton, Mr Emery Coughenour of Huntington, Mr Charles Yeauger of Gallipolis, Mr Basserer of Middleport and others whose names we did not learn. | 1754 | Clovea Ash, 69, of Spencer died May 26, 2009, in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston. Born May 6, 1940, in Roane County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Monnie Rhodes Waggoner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Kate, Hazel, Edna and Eloise; and a brother, Kenneth. She was retired from Kellwood Company, Spencer, with 25 years of service and enjoyed country music and dancing. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Ash; two daughters and their husbands, Kim and Alan Starcher of Spencer and Sheila “Dink” and Bobby Elias of Point Pleasant; one son and his wife, Randy and Robin Ash of Reedy; five sisters, Anna Faye Atkinson, Connie McGrew, Dorothy Waggoner and Roberta Ash, all of Spencer, and Elma Blair of Barberton, Ohio; one brother, Earl Waggoner of Xenia, Ohio; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Per her request, the body was cremated. Burial of the ashes will take place at a later date in Clover Cemetery, near Spencer. | 1755 | Daniel L. Thornton - Charleston Newspapers - (Mar/10/2006) On March 8, 2006, Jesus called and Daniel L. "Pee Wee" Thornton answered the call and went home to be with the Lord in CAMC General Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Thornton was retired from Billco Construction and a member of Paradise Church of God Mission. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Myrtle Thornton, and brothers, Georgie F. and Dencil R. Thornton. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Thornton; children, Randy J. and wife, Patricia Thornton, of Poca, Danny L. and wife, Traci Thornton, of Red House, and Gloria W. Thornton and companion, Richard Kessell, of Red House; sister, Nancy E. Craig of Leon; brothers, Carl E. Thornton of Buffalo, and Paul R. Thornton of Cleveland, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Rebekah, and Billy. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Nyle Fisher Sr. and Nyle Fisher Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Signed: Jacob Cohenour (x his mark) Gallipolis Journal -- Wednesday -- 22 December 1886 CHESHIRE ---- For some time those most intemately connected with Mr. Jacob Coughenour, have noticed signs his mind wandering, caused, as the physicians claim, by the veins leading to his brain becoming clogged; his condition has changed gradually for the worse until it was found necessary to keep constant watch over him; he has attempted self-destruction on several ocassions. The Probate Judge was called one day last week and Mr. Coughenour was declared insane. While his realtives may reluctantly admit it will no doubt be best to convey him to Athens. Jacob Coughenour was one of the most influential and respected men in the county; he always had the good of the people foremost in his mind and wilingly did as much as any other person for the benefit of the community; tis sad to think his misfortune and his friends calamity. Gallipolis Journal -- Wednesday -- 2 February 1887 CHESHIRE -- Jacob Coughenour died at the Athens Asylum, Tuesday night, Jan. 25th; his remains were brought home on the K & O train; the funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. T. D. Davis at the M E Church, Friday forenoon, the interment was made in the Gravel Hill Cemetery; thus ends the earthly career of a good man, whose religious influence which was more than ordinary, will long be felt. | 1765 | Died of Typhoid Obituary Mary Ellen Ritchey Rupe was born January 29, 1854, in Muskingum county, Ohio, and died November 14, 1896, at her home in Gallia county, Ohio. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. She was united in marriage to Jacob H Rupe, August 1, 1878. she united with the ME Church at the age of 9 years in Muskingum county, Ohio. She bore her severe illness of eight weeks with patience. She was a gentle, kind spirited woman, a devoted and faithful wife, a kind and indulgent mother. June 4, 1991 Northwest Herald, Crystal Lake, IL Dowl Little, 77 died Sunday, June 2, 1991 at Northern Illinois Medical Center. For 12 1/2 years he had been employed at Precision Twist in Crystal Lake and prior th that had been a coal miner for 32 years in Ohio and West Virginia. On June 14, 1952, in Gallipolis, Ohio, he married Ethel Wheaton. He belonged to the First United Pentecostal Church of McHenry. Besides his wife of Crystal Lake, he is survived by his children; six sons, Larry (Eletha) of Lake in the Hills, Harold (Cathy) of Okeechobee, FL, Clifford of Columbus, OH; Randy and Stanley of both of Crystal Lake, and Benny of Chicago; two daughters, Gloria (James) Gray of Woodstock and Beverly Jornd of McHenry; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Robert(Marianne) of College Park, MD, William of Middleport, OH, Raymond (Dorothy) of Cheshire, OH, and Daniel (Rita) of Crystal Lake; and two sisters, Betty (Larry) Abbott of Casa Grande, AZ, and Jean (Clinton) Ward of Needles, CA. He was a son of Benjamin and Mary Briggs. His early youth was spent in different counties of Ohio sharing the usual advantages afforded the pioneers of our country. January 23, 1856, William Briggs and Miss Olive Parker were united in marriage: of this union were born four children all of whom survive - George H Briggs of Cheshire, Ohio; Edward J Briggs of Franklin, Nebraska; Charles E Briggs and Mrs HC Cameron of Athens, O. Iin his early youth, he gave his young life to the service of God and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in which he found a home until as we believe he was called to the mansions above. Brother Briggs was a quiet man who did not seek notoriety or distinction; he was content to walk the more humble pathway as a man of God rather than seek worldly honors. His devoted wife with whom he walked the pathway of life for quite half a century was a fervent christian and in this faith they sought to raise their family. There is surely no spot on earth more dear than a christian home where Christ was exalted by obedient followers and where the principles of integrity were preserved in their purity adn life was not fickle or worldly but Christ was all in all. Brother Briggs loved his children and in them and for them he was glad to live his life over again. He was justly proud of his grandchildren adn deeply solitious of their welfare. he leaves to all these the inheritance of an honest, upright life more precious than rubies or gold for we believe him to have lived the life of a man of God. She was born in Jackson County, in which county her parents settled in 1827, and the date of her birth was August 25, 1831. The children of Mr and Mrs Rector are nine living and one deceased. | 1774 | From: "History of Byberry & Moreland In Philadelphia" published 1867 Andrew Ott Andrew Ott was born at Vartzheim, in Germany, in 1739, and was brought to this country by his parents when about five or six years old. They landed at Philadelphia, where they staid about six weeks, and then moved to a place in the country near the Pennypack Creek. When the Revolutionary War broke out, he enlisted in Washington's army under Captain Douglass. He was in the battles of Long Island and Brandywine, and at Fort Constitution on the Hudson, where there was some skirmishing. Soon after the was was over he married and settled in Byberry, where he resided for several years. After this, he bought a lot of land in Bucks County, where he spent the remainder of his days. He had no school learning, and could neither read nor write, yet he transacted all his business, and seldom made any mistakes. He was a plain, industrious, frugal man, a member of All Saint's church, and was much respected by his neighbors. He died in December, 1841, aged 102 years. | OTT, Andrew (I392)

Next lived in the house in Cheshire that Merrill Briggs bought when he married Rhoda in 1964, then on Route 7 above Cheshire (later torn down ), finally moved in with GW Briggs about 1918. HA died 1923? Garnet Kirby Mrs Garnet Kirby, 89, Cheshire, died at 1:30pm Saturday in the Holzer Medical Center. She had been in failing health for the last two years. Mrs Kirby was born Nov 5, 1885 in Cheshire Twp, daughter of the late George H and Anna Coughenour Briggs. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Henry, and a brother. Survivors include a son, Briggs Kirby of Cheshire, a grandson and three great grandsons. She was a member of the Cheshire Baptist church, a life member of the Little Kyger Grange, charter member of the Cheshire Easten Star, a past president of the Gallia County Home Women's Council, and a member of the Cheshire Wayside Garden Club. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Tuesday from the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Rev William Liber officiating. Will of Jacob Rothgeb Written 11/9/1850 Proved 6/9/1852 Wife Magdalina First wife, Barbara Children not named Witnesses, John A Mauck, Jacob Coughenour, & Reuben Rothgeb Jacob Coughenour and Reuben Rothgeb named in will as executors, refused Jacob Roadcap appears on the 1820 census with 9 kids. His marriage to Madeline Nye is in the marriage book. (Still don't know where the Magdelene Smith came from that I have - must have been Aunt Cora - where did she get it. The two first names are close, had she been married before?) Jacob seems to first show up in 1812 Chattels, with 3 horses and 2 cattle (damn the wives and kids - lets talk important!) along with John and Samuel. In 1813, the list is landowners, and I find only John and Samuel. In 1818 & 1819 Chattels, Jacob Rothgep shows up again along with Henry, John and Sam. 5 horses, 7 cattle in 1819. In 1821 his name is Roadcap, in 1822, Rothgap (Henry also, John & Sam are Roadcaps again). 1824 Chattels, Jacob & Henry Roadcape, J & S Rothgep. In1825, they are all Roadgaps and John and Sam have houses, and there are no Nyes listed. In the Will book, Jacob is listed as having a will in 1852- do you have it? | 1779 | Hardesty's Gallia Co: David Rothgeb - a son of Jacob and Barbara (Wideth) Rothgeb, was born in Shenandoah county, VA, April 11. 1809, coming to this county with his parents in 1810; his mother was a German by birth. David Rothgeb was married in Cheshire, by Alexander Frazier, July 28, 1836, to Elizabeth Scott, who is a native of this township born Jan 8, 1810. She is a daughter of Charles and Mary (Darst) Scott. The only offspring of this marriage is Mary Jane, born May 26, 1837 and who now resides on the homestead, managing all her business. The farm has a beautiful location, and is located three miles northwest of Cheshire, and about two and one-half miles from the Blue Sulphur Springs; she has about fifty acres of land, a portion of which contains coal. Her grandfather,Charles Scott, served in the old Indian war, leaving his wife and three children alone while he went to protect the settlement. He held the office of Justice of the peace about 1830 for several terms. An uncle of Miss Rothgeb, also named Charles Scott, enlisted in Company A, 2d Virginia Cavalry, in 1862, was in a great number of engagements and was mustered out shortly before the close of the war; his health was destroyed in the service. The parents of Mary Jane Rothgeb were Christian members of the First Kyger Freewill Baptiat Church for nearly 40 years before they died and though they were afflicted ever since she could remember, they always put their trust in God. Born June 7, 1925, in Reedy, West Virginia, to the late Joe O. and Virginia Grant Ashley, he spent 36 years living in Norton, OH. He retired after 36 years as a general foreman at the Akron Barberton Belt Railroad and returned to his childhood home in Reedy. Joseph was a World War II veteran and served in the Army infantry in the South Pacific. Joseph received the Purple Heart for his service. He was a member of the Purple Heart Club, the American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He loved working in his garden. He and his family ran a successful truck gardening business in the 60's and 70's. Joseph was an avid outdoorsman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dale, Robert, Jess and Blaine Ashley; sisters, Myrtle Ashley, Stella Ross and Carrie Benson; grandson, Joseph Allen Ashley; son-in-law, Michael Ray Fleisher. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen Meglich Ashley of Reedy; daughter, Linda June of Coventry, OH, sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel, Sr. and Vicki of Spencer, Les and Debbie of Doylestown, OH, James and Lyneen of Reedy; grandchildren, Nancy (Jim), Amy (Jeff), Nicole (David), Daniel, Jr. (Dawn), Michael, Kristy (Scott), Benjamin (Kati), Robert; great grandchildren, whom he especially adored, Jaret, Nathan, Cameron, Jimmy, Carter, Ashley, Matthew, Bryan, Alaena; sisters, Donna Meglich and Florene (Oren) Walker. During the next few years, AW Alkire, Adam Alkire, Joel Buffington, Isaac Lockhart, John Nesselroad, Samuel Summerville, Elijah Staats, Thomas Coleman, jr, and several others also settled in the district. The first marriage performed in the district was between William Harrison and Margaret, Daughter of John & Margaret Coleman. Dewitt Cemetery Located on a hill on the old Dewitt farm, owned by Clare Polk in 1952, near the junction of Route 2 and the Murraysville road, is an old cemetery known as the Dewitt cemetery, probably one of the oldest in the Murraysville area. Here are interred some of the first settlers of Muses Bottom, including two Revolutionary soldiers, John Dewitt and Charles smith . . . .Some markers.. In the Grant District Cemeteries Jackson County, WV Tombstone Inscriptions and Genealogical Information, it says "Dewitt, John Departed this life Jan 14, 1820, aged 61 yrs (Revolutionary Service: Pa. Archives (5th Series)Vol 8, pp 380, 421, 426, 435. This tombstone was destroyed by the blasting).'' I found these pages in the PA Archives and there is a John DeWitt listed but how do we know that he is our John DeWitt? (It's a company of the Militia of Northampton County, PA. On a couple of the pages there is a Jacob Dewit and Cornelius Dewit, Jr and Sr listed. Relatives of this John DeWitt?) John died in Jan so he wouldn't be on the 1820 census anyhow, however if he died in Jan 1810, he shouldn't be in the 1810! | 1797 | Jo Ann Litton, 65, of Cross Lanes, died Aug. 28, 2001, after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Gay, W.Va., to Rufus Garland and Lavinia Opal Litton. She graduated from Ripley High School in 1954, Glenville College in 1959, and earned a masters in education from West Virginia University in 1962. She taught elementary school in the Kanawha County Public School System for the first 10 years of her career. She then became a general supervisor at the Kanawha County Board of Education Central Office. She held various positions with the board, and in 1984 was made director of elementary schools, a position she held until her retirement in 1989. After retiring from the Kanawha County School System, she returned to the classroom and taught elementary school for another 10 years at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. An active member in church and community throughout her life, Jo Ann was a member of The Baptist Temple for many years and joined Cross Lanes United Methodist Church upon moving to Cross Lanes. She also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, and other professional organizations. She was preceded in death by her father, Rufus Garland Litton. She is survived by her mother, Lavinia Opal Casto Litton of Cross Lanes; her sister, Lavonne Litton Sanders of Birmingham, Ala.; two nieces, Anne Sanders Rand of Hamilton, Bermuda and Elizabeth Sanders Lopez of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandnieces, among other family and friends. Her unselfish and caring nature will be greatly missed. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Dr. Dennis Johnson and the Rev. | 1798 | Jonathan Rupe, son of Washington and Elizabeth Rupe was born near Kyger, Oh, April 21, 1842 and died on the farm north of town, where he had lived for 46 years, Nov 15, 1920, aged 78 years, 6 mo, and 24 days, He was married to Caroline Swisher on Oct 23, 1860. To this union were born five children, Electa, Horton, Ethel, Roy and Clyde. Horton died Feb 1, 1895. Ethel died Oct 25, 1900. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs Electa Rowland of Columbus, Roy and Clyde. three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs Caroline Arnold and brothers Jacob, Washington, Wm, Perry and Frank adn many other relatives and friends. his brother Henry and sister Adaline died many years ago. | 1799 | Julius COSSIN was born October 12, 1852, died June 19, 1911, aged 58 years, 8 months and 20 days. He was the son of Allen and Mariah (KING) COSSIN. Was married to Mary NEWELL, December 25, 1894, and is survived by his wife, step-daughter, five sons, four brothers and a large number of relatives and friends. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed in home and neighborhood where he has always lived. Julius was always a kind man having a smile and a pleasant word for all. He had been a patient sufferer for three years, when the death angel relieved him Monday morning from his suffering. He said he was willing and ready to go. He was laid to rest in the family burying ground, there to await the resurrection morning when "many shall be called but few will be chosen". There he wll meet his loved ones he has left here.
