| 1703 | Bobby Lee Rhodes Feb. 16, 1933 - Feb. 24, 2015 Bobby Lee Rhodes, 82, of Millwood passed away February 24, 2015 at Jackson General Hospital following a long illness. He was born February 16, 1933 at Roane County a son of the late Elihue and Blanche Riddle Rhodes. He was an Army Veteran during the Korean Conflict and later a member of the Army Reserve Unit in Ripley. He retired in 1997 from Ravenswood Aluminum (formerly Kaiser Aluminum) and was a member of the United Steel Workers Union 5668.He faithfully attended the Ripley Baptist Temple. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Showen Rhodes; sons Timothy (Joyce) Rhodes of Millwood, David Rhodes of Columbus, OH; daughters Charla Rhodes of Millwood and Marsha (Jack) Linkinoggor of Spencer; grandchildren Nathan Rhodes of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Scott Rhodes of Morgantown, Megan Cline of Barboursville and Kaden Linkinoggor of Spencer and great grandchild Lincoln Cline. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Richards. Mrs. Rebecca Hatcher Mayes, widow of Milo Mayes, died today at 5 a.m. in the home of her niece, Mrs. Kenneth Dunn, near Cannon Mills following a long illness. She was 71. Mrs. Mayes was born in Doddridge County, W. Va., and lived in East Liverpool 28 years. She was a member of the United Brethren Church. She leaves two sons, William Hatcher of Wellsville, and Omer C. Hatcher of Akron; six daughters, Mrs. Mary. F. Broadbent of Wellsville, Mrs. Ruby F. Nicholson of Cleveland, and Mrs. Virgie D. Bucheit, Mrs. Guy Baumgardner, Mrs. Myrtle Anderson and Mrs. George VanWey of East Liverpool, and 30 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Reynolds, 76, of Elizabeth died Thursday, June 14, 2001 at his home. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Orval Curtis and Vena Kerby Reynolds. He did farm work and formerly worked at Monarch Rubber and Kellwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by three sons, Geary, Paul and Terry Reynolds, all of Elizabeth; two daughters, Brenda Burns of St. Marys and Tammy Morrow of Elizabeth; three brothers, Cecil Reynolds of Spencer, Cleo Reynolds of Elizabeth and Harold Reynolds of Ohio; one sister, Bessie Hunt of Spencer; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth M. Greathouse Reynolds; one son, Larry Reynolds; and one brother, Roy B. Reynolds. Services were Sunday at Gandee Chapel near Spencer with Rev. Larry Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Wright Cemetery, Spencer. | 1706 | Thomas, Susan Virginia (Tolley) Funeral services for Susan Virginia Thomas, 78, were held from the Vail Funeral Home in Ripley Sunday afternoon with the Rev. J. F. Cunningham of the Methodist Church in charge and the burial was in the Halbert Cemetery near Gay. Mrs. Thomas died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hugh Kelly in Belpre, Ohio, on Friday. She was a daughter of the late Granville and Katherine Southall Tolley and was a native of the Gay Community, and had been a member of the Elk Fork Methodist Church for the past 65 years. She had been ill for six weeks and death had been expected, relatives said. Survivors include one son, Kenna L. Thomas of Gay; two daughters, Mrs, Kelly at whose home she died and Mrs. Daniel Evans of Parkersburg; and two brothers, C. W. Tolley of Ripley and S.O. Tolley of Gay. (Friday, 9 Jan 1948). He worked in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. Born August 22, 1949, he was the son of the late Denver Lee and Helen Thornton Casto. Westfall Family Zachariah Westfall was another of the pupils in the first Buckhannon school, along with Thomas Carney and David Casto. He came from Hacker's Creek to Mill Creek in 1827, and settled on Buffalo Lick Run of Tug Fork. (Perhaps he was a son of James Westfall, of Beverly.) | 1719 | 1850 census 304: Charles Rector, 74, m, farmer Sarah, 64, f From Darrell Rector: Charles was the first Rector to come over the mountains from Fauquier Co, VA. He served as high sheriff of Wood Co, WV, which at the time in the late 1840 or early 1850 comprised Pleasant and Wirt counties. In 1848, he was a member of the first county court of Wirt County, I have the feeling after some thought, that Charles and Sarah are buried out in Wirt Co. Aunt Mamie (Mrs. W.H. Carney of Findlay, OH) says Charles Rector and his wife Sarah Ruth Rust had four children, Stephen Steptoe, Levin Ludwell, Susan who married a Kyger and Sally who married Smith whose son founded the WH Smith Hardware in Parkersburg, WV. Southern Methodist Itinerant. Parkersburg, Virginia, July 20, 1859. Vol. IV. No. 15. Whole No. 87. Page 4, Column 1 CHARLES RECTOR was born April 24th, 1776, and departed this life, at the residence of his son, L. Rector, in Jackson county, Va., June 26th, 1859. Father Rector joined the church under the ministry of Rev. John A. Power, some thirty-five years ago and lived a consistent member until his death. The writer visited him during his last illness, and found him waiting patiently for the Master to call him from labor to refreshment. We have never seen a christian more fully resigned to the will of God. He has left a companion, (who cannot see the light of the material sun, but thank God, she can behold by faith, the Sun of Righteousness,) a number of children and friends to mourn, but thank God, we mourn not as those who have no hope. We do not know her name. William was born in 1811 in eastern New York and brought by his father to Athens county, OH, in 1816. We do not know who else was in the party that came by wagon train to Ohio. At one point William, age five, got tired of riding and got out to walk. When they saw he was no longer in sight, they went back to hunt for him and found him about a mile behind, walking unconcernedly along following the wagon tracks. In 1825, Andrew married Theodocia Blake, the widow of Comfort Blake. Her maiden name was Collins and she was the dughter of a fisherman off Cape Cod, Mass. | 1725 | 1880 Census Gallia Co, Oh From Letter from Thelma L Rothgeb, Sept 17, 1972 I will start with (1) John Jacob Rothgeb, (born 1711 - died 1753) who came over to the United States from Egypt (where he had served 7 years for his passage to America) and married a girl who came over on the same ship, however her name is unknown. They had one son, George. Of his second marriage to a Miss Good there was one son Peter. II George married Magdelena Biedler and had four children: Isaac, Abraham, Jacob and Elizabeth. Of his marriage to Mary Graybill there were four children: David, Barbara, and twins George and Christian (Mary died in childbirth when the twins were born.) He then married Barbara Bear and had: Samuel,, Joseph, John, Michael (my ancestor), Henry, Anna, Esther, Mary, Daniel and an infant daughter unnamed and Reuben. III Jacob was born in 1711, married in 1802 and died March 18, 1851. I have no dates on his wife Barbara Wydick. They had Christian, Henry, George, Mollie, Rudolph, Jacob, Elizabeth, David and Joseph. They moved to Washington Co in 1800 and shortly after moved to Gallia Co, Oh, which was then all a wilderness. (Near Point Pleasant, WV, on the Ohio River) He then married Magdelena Barbara Smith and they had Tobias, John, Julia adn Benny. IV Elizabeth Rothgeb was born Dec 8, 1817 adn married George Washington Rupe on May 12, 1837. Their children were: Henry, Caroline, Jonathan, Joseph, Adaline, Jacob Henry, a son who died at birth, Washington, William, Perry, and Franklin. In the 1759 enlistment, Edward is noted to be 24 year old, born in Virginia, five feet four inches tall, and of fair complexion. Parts of his land he deeded 20 July 1790 (Washington Ca. PA Deed Book 12-H, pages 59 and 62) to his son, Peter. He was a member of the Cheshire Baptist church, of the Cheshire Masonic Lodge, of Chapter 450 Eastern Star and a life member of the Little Kyger Grange. Survivors include his wife and a son. He married Vivian Fowler March 26, 1937, at Briggsdale, Ohio. Their son is George Franklin Kirby, Boston, Mass. Their daughter-in-law is Marian Kirby and there are three grandsons, Curtis, Christopher and Clark. The widow is the daughter of teh late Isaac and Rosanna Fowler, adn she is a retired schoolteacher. Briggs Kirby was born March 15, 1909, at Clifton Forge, VA to the late Jenry Albert and Garnet Briggs Kirby. His father died in 1923, his mother in 1975. She was one of a family of eleven children. The two brothers, JM of Cheshire and AA of Vinton, together with two sisters, Mrs JL Butcher of Cheshire and Mrs Jl Miller of Rio Grande, survive. The deceased was baptised in her early life by Rev J W Fulton at Old Kyger church, becoming a member of that church. She later transferred her membership to Cheshire Baptist church where she has been an active and devoted member. Anne E Coughenour was united in marriage to George H Briggs on Novenber 21, 1883. To this union was born two children, Mrs Garnet Kirby who is at home and David W Briggs of Cheshire. Besides the bereaved companion and children, four grandchildren , Briggs Kirby, Merrill, Beatrice, and Helen Dorothy Briggs are left to mourn their loss. Several nephews, neices and many other relatives and friends feel the loss of one whose obituary has just been lived in the community shere her entire life was spent. Mrs Briggs was a charter member of the Little Kyger Grange, the Baptist Missionary Society and the WCTU.
